How did this start?

In 2019, I was going through this phase realising I wasn’t actually very sure what I wanted to do. When talking to friends about my confusion, I found a lot of people were all trying to answer these same questions, why are we doing what we are doing? What do we actually want to do? And where are we going?

The thing is, I was groomed to go into finance but found out really quickly that it was not for me, so the first question I need to answer was what else is out there?

I didn’t know much about what people like me actually did professionally. I know we become doctors, lawyers etc but what else is out there for your average young African outside of that. So I began interviewing people, I spoke with pastors, real estate investors, students, social workers, other professionals, friends, and family. It was interesting when asking people what else is out there. We ended up talking about what success meant, the why behind what made them choose their profession, what it meant to have a family, regrets, dreams, faith and so much more.

These were amazing conversations, and I wanted to share them with others who are like me just trying to figure out what exactly we are doing with this life we have been given.

So what will you get out of this website?

  • Everyday Stories of African Diaspora: We hear a lot about major leaders and influencers living their lives, but success is not just found when hitting the moon, even if they seem small, stars still shine bright. So we focus on those everyday people and everyday successes.
  • Career options: Like I said before, I really had no idea on what sort of careers were available for someone like me. We are not just fated for middle management in x fortune 500 (though that is still a fantastic life). There are multiple career options out there we just need to find them.
  • How to understand what you want: This is a big point of conversation for many friends, we are told from day one what we are expected to be especially as a young person. So how do you manage external expectations with your personal ones? Just know that you are not alone.

Where do I start?

Check out the African Explainer!

That’s right we are on the Youtubes! I’ve been lucky to be surrounded by people throughout the continent. Through all the trivia games I’ve always found it funny how much we really don’t know much about our neighboring countries. It’s crazy we claim the same continent but know very little about each other!

That’s what the Africa Explainer is about from economics, to history to society all shall be explained…by the African Explainer
